I can't comment on the cocaine, but I'm still smoking after 30 years, and no real inclination to stop.
Sounds like he *does* have the inclination to stop, so my (unsolicited, take-it-or-leave-it) advice is to be gentle and supportive, and find out how you can help him through it. <3
(Yes, I know it's vaping, not smoking, but I don't think it's any less addictive)
