So, I had the chance to talk to Tadge Dryja for a few minutes about the idea of soft-fork expiry…the idea of making a soft fork where tules are enforced only in a certain time interval, say January to December of 2026…this way, no permanent harm for adopting a soft fork that one might regret in the future.
Tadge rather quickly saw how this idea kind of already exists or could easily be made to exist with taproot…one can have a spending pathway with quantum resistant signatures and a pathway with standard signature…if quantum computers come in to existence, standard signature transactions could be soft forked out and force users to use the quantum resistant spending path. We could make wallet software a decade in advance implement this as a safeguard against quantum attacks.
