Potatoes, that is the best currency.
You can't eat bullets, soon enough they'll eat you. The prepared man growns his own food.
And I talk from experience. At one point was one of the few authorized people at my country that could carry and use any kind of weapon on the street, as long as not needing a second person to munition them.
In real world conflicts, potatoes are king.
