I occasionally upload small videos to mine, usually short meme like stuff. Compressing a video with something like handbrake can get a video really small if it's the type of video that won't suffer if you compress it a fair bit. Bonus points if it's behind a CDN that can lighten the load a bit if a bunch of people start requesting videos.
Though bigger videos can add up fast, especially if you want to offer multiple different resolutions and/or codecs, so an existing platform might still be the better option.
