you might want to add a substantial amount of washing soda and do it in a hot wash
yes, the fibres are different to cotton, they have layers of silica, and probably the chemical process used to rett them (break the fibre apart) likely doesn't do a complete job and a little alkali will loosen off the rest... also use some sodium percarbonate or sodium persulfate based bleach on it, it should make much of that go away... i'm not sure if sodium hypochlorite (chlorine bleach) is ok to use with it, but if so, it will rip out a lot more stuff, not suitable unless the fabric is white though, it's been some time since i owned some bamboo stuff, i think i just had a mattress that was coated with it, and i've had socks also, they have a harder, slicker feel to them and yeah a bit of a different and persistent smell
