I worked at a hospital that did organ transplants. As a respiratory therapist, we would have to do the brain death protocols with the nurses and 2 physicians.
They clearly had no higher function. On some, brain perfusion studies are done to show if blood flow to the brain. Ex: if high ventilation settings.
THEN, when declared dead, the family decides. If they say NO donation, the patient is taken off life support.
Otherwise, the transport team takes over care.
