'Mercy' is God NOT GIVING us what we DO deserve (namely, punishment for sins of commission and omission).
'Grace' is God GIVING us what we DO NOT deserve (namely, the reward of eternal life, obtained on our behalf, by Jesus Christ, the Lord).
He bore what we deserve so that we could receive, as a gift, what he deserved.
This is the 'wondrous exchange' of the gospel:
"He made him, who knew no sin, to become sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him." 2 Cor. 5:21
"But he was wounded for our transgresstions, [he] was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement that brought us peace was laid upon him, and by his stripes we are healed." Isa. 53:5
"But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons." Gal. 4:4-5
Let us, each one, turn away from sin, and turn to Christ.
