This statement largely reflects Russian propaganda and contains several misleading or false claims:
1. Crimean Referendum (2014): Russia occupied Crimea with unmarked troops before holding a so-called referendum on March 16, 2014. Conducted under military control, it did not meet international standards and was widely condemned as illegitimate by Ukraine, the EU, the US, and the UN.
2. Overthrow of the Ukrainian government: The Euromaidan protests in 2013 and 2014 led to the ousting of President Yanukovych, who fled to Russia. There was no neo-Nazi takeover. A transitional government was formed, followed by democratic elections.
3. Ethnic cleansing in Eastern Ukraine: There is no credible evidence that Ukraine targeted Russian-speaking citizens. Instead, Russia actively supported separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk with weapons, fighters, and logistics.
4. Independence votes in Donetsk and Luhansk: These referendums were neither internationally recognized nor conducted under fair conditions, as they took place under the influence of pro-Russian militias.
5. Russian intervention: Russia has supported separatists in Eastern Ukraine since 2014 and annexed Crimea. Calling it a civil war ignores Russia’s direct military involvement, which escalated into a full-scale invasion in 2022.
This narrative distorts reality to justify Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
