Birthright citizenship is super-duper important and to prove it, you just need to compare and contrast the U.S. and the European Union.
Despite what this administration likes to pretend, in the U.S., all children born here have automatic and unconditional citizenship thanks to the 14th Amendment. No country in the EU does this to children born to foreign parents, legal or otherwise.
Because many European-born non-citizens lack full political rights, they can be more easily subjected to deportation or exclusion from social services, even if they have lived in the country their entire lives. The European system makes it easier for governments to control immigrant populations without granting them full participation in society, all while making them contribute into the welfare systems that they do not have equal and permanent access to.
This is what Trump and company are trying to replicate here in the U.S. It's "Making America Great Again" by redefining who is "American".
