While listening to #BitcoinMechanic’s “Bitcoin Core Actively Sabotaging Bitcoin”, I couldn’t help but think….
“wow, I am witnessing and actively participating (as a BTC node runner) in a new Bitcoin cultural historical event - the 2025 OP_Return War”
For those who you who don’t know, this debate revolve around the use of the bitcoin blockchain for purposes other than simple transactions, such as storing arbitrary data.
I, for one, agree with BitcoinMechanic that Bitcoin should not remove the “restrictions on how much data can be stored using OP_RETURN, which is currently capped at 80 bytes” which, if removed, could potentially lead to altcoin-like features & use cases benefiting side-chains & cross-chain bridges.
“The controversy recalls the 2014 ‘OP_RETURN Wars,’ when spam concerns prompted a temporary data cap reduction.
While some view the change as a modernization step, others fear it risks turning Bitcoin into a platform for non-monetary uses, undermining its foundational principles.”
Also I understand there needs to be a fine balance between ossification & innovation, but (looking at you BTC devs) please don’t steamroll over those who don’t agree with the proposals. Not only will this erode the confidence of bitcoin believers who carried the torch all these years, but also one of Bitcoin’s fundamental ethos & principles in decentralization.
Otherwise.. what’s the point of running the greatest decentralized monetary system the world has ever seen, when our voice will not be heard, or rightfully considered, due to the centralization of Bitcoin Core developers?
And it’s not a good look when banning those who share a different perspective, with legitimate concerns, that ALSO happen to resonate with the same concerns in 2014.
DON’T LET BITCOIN BECOME A SHITCOIN, GUYS
