But why wasn't it included?
Is it not because of the supply-audit design? Isn't it so that privacy features tend to be at the expense of supply-auditability? There is a trade-off that is expected and the trade-off that is accepted makes the system susceptible to the other side of the equation. We can't have it all at the core-level design. We can, however, build on top of the core design foundation.
Maybe one day, as bitcoin script gets developed in a safe way, we can have a softfork that further improves the privacy-features aspect of bitcoin.
Notwithstanding the above, the choice of supply side transparency through core supply-audit design is the more prudent way to build from than vice versa.
