In January 1811, nearly 500 enslaved men and women fought for their freedom at the Woodland plantation in LaPlace, La. It was America's largest slave revolt. Last month, about 80 people gathered to commemorate that event, dancing, singing and worshipping together over plates of red rice and beans. Woodland is now owned by twin Black sisters, Jo and Joy Banner, who run the Descendants Project, a community organization. Their mission? To honor the courage of past revolutionaries, and provide strength for those facing modern challenges. Here's more from Capital B News.
