Xi Jinping went to extreme lengths to avoid meeting Mark Zuckerberg at the APEC summit, deploying dozens of bodyguards as a literal human wall between himself and the Meta CEO.
Zuckerberg hoped a carefully planned 'chance' encounter would open doors into China's lucrative market, but Xi's entourage made sure no eye contact—or conversation—was possible. Zuckerberg previously boasted of a brief Mandarin chat with Xi, but this time, Xi effectively ghosted him.
Beijing continues keeping Meta platforms blocked, underscoring China's firm stance on internet censorship and tech sovereignty.
