A significant number of Indian indentured laborers (Girmitiyas) who made their way to the Caribbean were fleeing dire poverty, devastating famine, and the heavy burden of caste oppression in colonial India.
Their journey wasn’t for the sake of privilege; it was a desperate quest for survival.
Many generations later, the descendants of those laborers are still grappling with the profound loss of their homeland, rich heritage, and often a lost connection to the opportunities that still exist in India.
