The discovery of 12,000-year-old petroglyphs in the Ratnagiri and Rajapur areas of Maharashtra, India, located on the Konkan coastline. These rock carvings, etched on flat hilltops, date back to around 10,000 BCE based on Mesolithic tools found at the sites, placing them at the very beginning of the post-glacial epoch after the Younger Dryas climatic event.
Global Symbolic Connections: Some carvings depict sacred symbols known worldwide, such as the Winged Scarab (a symbol of creation and rebirth prominent in ancient Egypt), the "Master of Animals" motif (a heroic figure controlling animals, found in ancient Mesopotamian, Indus Valley, Egyptian, and Greek art), and astrological symbols like Pisces and Aquarius. The Pisces symbol, consisting of two fish connected by a chord, and the Aquarius figure holding a water jar, suggest an ancient sky chart etched on the ground, pushing back the origins of astrological knowledge to the Ice Age.
Depictions of Extinct and Exotic Animals: The petroglyphs show animals like rhinoceroses and hippopotamuses, which are no longer found in the region. The hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon) became extinct in India over 9,000 years ago, indicating the carvings are at least that old. Intriguingly, one petroglyph resembles a kangaroo, an animal native to Australia, raising questions about possible ancient oceanic contacts or lost prehistoric fauna in India.
Implications for Lost Civilizations: The dating and complexity of these petroglyphs suggest they may represent the esoteric wisdom of a lost Ice Age civilization that survived the Younger Dryas cataclysms. Survivors might have settled along the Konkan coast, preserving their sacred symbols on rock surfaces rather than building large monuments.
Cultural and Historical Significance: The petroglyphs challenge current understandings of civilization origins, indicating advanced symbolic and artistic expression much earlier than previously thought. Additional discoveries in nearby Sindhudurg district show symbols like the Imperial Eagle and the Andean Staff God, predating known depictions by thousands of years.
