My impression was that Calyx just wants to de-google the phone, but graphene actually wants to advance AOSP security.
Graphene supports the Google Play Store & services (but without privileged access, they're as isolated as any other app), so IME it seems to have fewer tradeoffs as most apps don't complain. They actually recommend the play store over f-droid/obtainium for reasons that I... can't easily dismiss.
Either way, some apps simply won't work without a stock OS no matter how stupid & unnecessary that artificial constraint is. Banking apps mostly IME. Good reason to just opt out of all of that... 😏
