The point is that John Swinney probably doesn't necessarily want the specifics of men in women's spaces. He has to go along with it because it's now SNP lore and he can't go back on it because these are the colours they nailed to their mast.
It was probably done when the main goal of the SNP was to look at England and do whatever was policy bigger/better to show their progressive credentials (see convid policy as an example). It ticked all the boxes for the *we hate Britain* narrative whose voices were loudest. It also rode the out-of-control blob spending grift as the cause that couldn't be questioned without being accused of hyperbolic consequences (so you want trans children to die?).
The SNP debacle is a good example of a worthy, clear and well-supported political cause that had other ideologies piggyback on its name and ruin it from within (see also Stonewall, WEP etc).
And like all politicians before him whose personal ambition far exceeds his talent or devotion to public service, Swinney has picked up the poisoned chalice and must now sup deeply or not sup at all, but either spells death for his political career. But fear not, for the Peter Principle and the revolving door may see him at least comfortable in his future.
