Yeah, it's typical in my experience to have staffing cycles. We'll be up for a bit before large numbers of people quit or move to other areas of healthcare (admin, clinics, etc). Staffing is only part of the problem though. Patient demands have skyrocketed (US perspective). People seem to think the emergency department is a hotel. I've had grown, able people tell us they want us to wipe their asses solely because they believe it's our job. Thankfully, many of us have adopted what we call "encouragement of independence and self-care," but managers aren't always supportive of this. It's the "customer is always right" mentality applied to a department notorious for losing money.
To be fair, my specialty is emergency medicine. I'm sure people in dermatology or whatever have it easier. Healthcare is a very broad term.
