Amazon changed the format after that and I haven't bought any new ebooks on Amazon since then, so I can't say if it's still possible. It's a game of cat and mouse. Yes, for Calibre to work with your existing Kindle ebooks you would need the serial number of a Kindle registered to your Amazon account. Probably one of the reasons fairly old devices are still in demand 🤷
