On this day in 1991: ‘The Highway of Death’
Iraqi troops and vehicles were withdrawing from Kuwait in compliance with UN resolution 660 along Highway 80.
George H. W. Bush ordered the bombardment of the retreating column, which included civilians, 3000 trucks, jeeps, cars, ambulances, and tanks. For 10 hours, US warplanes bombed the highway mercilessly as Iraqis were burned and blown to pieces by US bombs.
By the end of the massacre, some estimates put the final casualty count as high as 10,000. White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater had promised that the US and its coalition partners would not attack Iraqi forces leaving Kuwait, which turned out to be a blatant lie, revealed in this heinous war crime.
“Even in Vietnam I didn’t see anything like this. It’s pathetic,” said Major Bob Nugent, an Army intelligence officer.
