The newer Cadet Edition is a pretty good intro, but when I learned we just got dumped into the Captain's Edition and had to study for weeks before being able to play effectively.
But plotting out energy use, running a turn out, marking off damage on Ship System Display photocopies, really captured the feel of Star Trek combat, being an officer where skill matters.
