George Washington Carver, born into slavery around 1864, became a pioneering agricultural scientist and inventor.
After earning his master's degree in agricultural science from Iowa State, he joined the Tuskegee Institute in 1896. There, Carver developed innovative farming techniques to combat soil depletion from cotton farming.
He introduced crop rotation, encouraging farmers to grow crops like peanuts, sweet potatoes, and soybeans alongside cotton to boost soil health and promote sustainable farming.
Carver’s groundbreaking research led to over 100 products from peanuts, including dyes, plastics, gasoline, and rubber. He also created valuable products from sweet potatoes and soybeans, like flour, vinegar, and ink.
His work provided farmers with new income opportunities and promoted environmental conservation by advocating crop diversity and soil health.
Carver’s lasting contributions revolutionized American agriculture and sustainable farming practices.
