I’m not a true believer in any of these microblogging platforms. They’re tools. Nothing more. I go with what works when it works.
When I get burned — as I have been on Masto — I use other tools. I was the same way about the Apple vs. PC debate of 20 years ago. I used both as needs dictated.
And becoming an early adopter is completely out of the question for me. The product has to prove itself to me before I rely on it.
I don’t fall in love with brands owned by powers, greater than I, who have their own interest in consumers falling in love with brands. It’s not the brand that makes good content, it’s the users.
When I first arrived on Mastodon, some would block me for tooting #Twitter content. Recently, it’s #Bluesky that’s the pariah here. I wasn’t deterred in either case from finding content from users across platforms I have come to trust.
While I am now just an inactive lurker on Twitter, I have made good progress on Bluesky (the kind I used to make here until last November). I’m not in love with Bluesky, but I don’t hate it either.
When all is said and done, it’s not the algorithms or moderator that make me appreciate a platform, it’s the follows I curate. Users create the usefulness of any platform. That’s true here. That’s true everywhere.
