Ventriloquism dates back to the sixth century BC, and was a way to talk to the dead through the belly. Ventriloquist means "belly speaker" in Latin.

The ancient Greeks called this practice "gastromancy"—a form of divination through sounds interpreted as coming from the stomach. This term comes from the Greek words "gaster" (stomach) and "manteia" (divination). These practitioners were sometimes called "engastrimythos" or "engastrimanteis" (belly-prophets) who were believed to be possessed by spirits that spoke through them.
