Calinic of Cernica, born in Bucharest in 1787, felt a deep spiritual calling early in life. After his parents' passing, he joined the Cernica Monastery, becoming a monk in 1808. He dedicated himself to prayer and asceticism, soon becoming known for his wisdom and piety. He resisted secularization. Later as Bishop of Râmnic, he focused on restoring churches and supporting the poor.
