The printing press was always a centralizing force. Before the printing press was the town crier. Anyone could stand up and shout over him. No-one could prevent a paper from printing what they would.
The paper brought with it credibility, one like the Jerk espouses when he finds his name in the phone book; Undeserved credibility. Big money and big government love to direct this credibility, it (with the schools) use this credibility to influence people and seize power.
Social media reversed these centuries of centralization, but quickly the chokepoint was identified in the board room and control was restored to the empire.
Decentralized social media, alongside decentralized money, restores free speech.
Free speech has not been with us since Gutenberg.
