The purpose of proof-of-work in #Bitcoin is to enable an individual to determine the network state without appeal to other forms of consensus.
This only works if participants can run nodes. If someone can’t run a node, then they can’t validate proof of work, and the entire system fails for them. They’re right back to the “trust me bro” model that applies to everything else.
When a person runs a node, they opt in to a particular set of consensus rules. Anyone is free to join. Everyone is free to leave. We are all tenants at will.
