延安男女性别比例严重失衡。1938年前30∶1，1941年18∶1，[11]1944年4月8∶1。 赴延女知青大多来自城镇，形貌气质较佳，择偶余地很大，行情热俏，自我感觉「多么的稀有和矜贵」。她们定谱「王明的口才，博古的理论」，非大官、大知识分子不嫁。
城镇女性的到来，中共高干层掀起一阵离婚再婚热。除了
毛泽东离贺子珍娶江青，美籍医生马海德向韩素音揶揄：「刘少奇曾四次离婚，五次再婚，但是每次都是完全合法。」工农干部与小知识分子甚吃瘪，1942年10月19日，毛泽东在大会上批评某妇因爱人当了驴马队指导员，就不爱了。男性选择标准一路放低：「一是女的、二是大脚、三是识字就好。男的身分是一落千丈，女的身价是直线上升。……男找女的，几乎到了饥不择食的地步。」
女大学生在延河边洗脚，对岸男同胞列队傻看，女生挤眼直笑：「瞧，咱们的『尾巴』又来了！」时间一长，女生将常来河边的男人呼为「河防司令」，内中还有后来的「开国元勋」。抗联出身的留苏女生黎侠，每天清晨都能在窑洞窗口发现几封求爱信；哈尔滨姑娘郭霁云「回头率」极高，许多男性以各种方式求爱；南方姑娘钟路遭南洋华侨及广东男士「围追堵截」，窑洞门缝、衣服口袋塞满字条，人称「被围困的女八路」，被逼无奈，她只好公开与张力克（后任沈阳市委副书记）的恋情，1941年早早结婚。老干部的求爱信，一般只有几句，但都有关键内容――「我爱你！」
周六下午，延安女大校门十分热闹，会客室挤满男人，女大生谑称：「礼拜六，四郎探母了！」周六是规定的团圆日，亦称「阵地战」，其它日子相聚，呼为「游击战」。延安新歌谣：「女大窑洞万丈高！抗大学生够不着……延水河边一对一对真不少，西北旅舍游击战争逞英豪……」一般人对性欲还得掖掖藏藏，惟毛泽东敢于直言。一位抗大生写信问毛为什么与贺子珍离婚而与蓝苹结婚？是否符合毛自己提出的三原则？毛回信：「同贺子珍同志是为了意见不合，同蓝苹同志是为了解决性欲……」
