I was initially going to try start9 when I was building my new node but had issues getting it to work on the hardware I was using so ended up building everything manually on Linux. It was more work but in the end I’m glad I did it that way.

Self-hosted Alby Hub has a RELAY environment variable that can be set to specify the relay used for NWC. I’ve built a strfry relay on a cheap VPS which I am using with my Alby Hub so I can now send NWC zaps without reliance on Alby’s relay. Seems to work well.
I’m not sure if I will keep this set up but after the issues with Alby a few days ago I wanted to confirm this works. There is still the reliance on Alby for the lightning address to receive zaps though.

And while I tend to agree with your sentiment, I do think zaps are a fundamental shift in monetization possibilities as they allow for another form of profit-making thay doesn't have to rely on data harvesting, clicks, and ads. Existing fiat platforms have predatory design patterns, yes, but they can be made drastically better with zaps.

My old employer once accidentally filed an incorrect W-2 form and sent me the corrected one after I had already filed. So, I mailed an amended return and got a notice that it was wrong a month or so after. Upon calling the IRS for clarification (which they first left me on-hold for 2 hours ), they told me my amended return and all the documents used for support were invalid because they received the corrected W-2 a couple days after I filed the amended return, so they had to throw away my amendment and required me to file another. Thing is, you can't file amendments digitally and must physically mail them, including supporting documents and the like. So now I have to go and print another fat stack of papers and mail it just to wait again and hope it's accepted, all so I can prove to them that I owe $7... 😑
