the big deal about #cashu is that it lets you do async payments, for when lightning is offline
well, first of all, if the lightning is offline you simply can't redeem those nuts anyway, because your lightning is offline, see?
secondly, if you want async payments, there's this thing called "bitcoin on chain", maybe you heard of it?
oh, no good for less than $100?
i'm not gonna argue that lightning network's connectivity is inherently flaky at the edges because that's just how it is, receiver makes a list of nodes to pass the payment through, and as it is doing that, one of them can become a full channel, or go offline, and then the payment will not work
as it is, lightning implementations are barely keeping up with implementing Atomic Multipath Payments but what we really need is Redundant Multipath Payments where clients make multiple paths that carry the payment in parallel and first to the other side blocks the others from being accepted
the other thing is that the p2p network of lightning network is really stingy on useful data (network intelligence, or network state consistency) to help ensure that receivers don't pick dodgy paths
i don't think that even it's on the table yet the kind of addition to bitcoin scripting that would enable a path-routed payment, or if such a thing can even be trusted, this is the challenge of state channels - who picks the paths, can be spying on you by picking their node at the first hop in the channels... and tracing you to an LNURL probably isn't that difficult either
none of the solutions existing are really sufficient, and ecash is worse than insufficient, it's a wide open field for scamming and incompetence

Yeah, our main one was down because we were rearranging the infrastructure. I was just using Minibits as a stop-gap measure. We're not actually used to getting larger donations. Nearly fell of my chair, and then it was like, uh oh time to panic.
We're now setup for bigger donations, tho, with our LN. Made the channel bigger and stuff. Live and learn.
The ability to have Minibits as a fallback was nice, tho. Our LN is sometimes hard to zap because reasons. 🤷♀️ Might just be some network problem. A secondary wallet would be a nice client feature.

yeah, i'm just gonna say don't bother with ecash except for with small donations if at all, but deprecate it and put it down low so people miss it unless they are really determined
for lightning just maybe need a secondary that is listed second that runs as backup, like, there is some "family and friends" uncle jim style feature in alby hub i could have my server doing backup secondary and forward what comes to that account to you, but mostly should only see that happen when your main one is down

I think I had like 5 different mints, including one with USDT on it, but I can only remember the Minibits one and I seem to have the wrong seed, so I probably can't recover from the other ones, anyway.
I'm a very orderly person, so it's a bit unnerving that this is all so chaotic. Feel like Kierean with his server mess.

Tried the cashu wallet, but it was too buggy and confusing.
Minibits is at least trying to run a serious operation, but the tech isn't there. Like, I can't remember all of the mints I had, but one that contained quite a bit of money isn't on any mint list, that I can find. Where mint? But I can't remember what the mint's name is, exactly, so maybe I'm seeing it and not recognizing it. Maybe the mint is winding down operations and doesn't want to be listed.
The wallets don't remember which mints you had, but they don't tell you that until it's too late. You need to write the mints down, not just the seeds. 🤦♀️

mochi the #catstr may possibly have used the human toilet last night because despite much comings and goings as he tried to open the window behind the shower - and he did manage to pull it a little more open, there was no wees on the floor anywhere
i did briefly have a period of the shower area being accessible to him, but i didn't particularly notice any smell either
i'm hopeful that once he's got to grips with being stuck in there, and the handy dandy platform to make him backing up to the toilet bowl and letting fly, that he will figure it out himself, but i have to confine him to this space until i'm dead certain he has finally cottoned on, because once he knows he can do toilet on that, he won't bother going anywhere else
part of the trick of cat training is that if you want them to respond to you, then you need a carrot or stick conditioning mechanism, like the actual feeding at the bell trick, but if you need them to respond to their own inner state, they need to not associate it with you, but for them to perceive it as a fact of the environment, so, although he knows i'm preventing him getting out, and not actively letting him back out on request, for many hours he is snoozing there in a half daze pondering the matter of that pesky window that won't open for him
yes, i think i know the mind of the kitty, he is not stubborn he's just too smart to do what i want him to do unless he thinks it's a good idea.
it's also a rather rainy day today i think i won't do my walk around the mountain, or let the cat outside

Yeah the censorship resistance draws in some of the real whackadoos, 💯 on the mass adoption not sure if that will ever be the point to draw in everyone. I see it along the lines of bitcoins long time preference. Build a place where you can say wathever you want without true moderation and some of its application building benefits are pretty cool hop from one app/ client to another without being silo’s in. We do that, but that has nothing to do with NIPs or GitHub. We write it on Nostr.
NIPs are only the ID numbers that you get assigned, if the NIPs repo merges your spec on GitHub. Otherwise, you have to devise your own numbering system (we use "NKBIP", instead of "NIP") and find some other place to store it.

You just claimed that I suggested undocumented blackbox development, as if the alternative were documented whitebox development.
The documentation and the development are not linked. They are not even necessarily written by the same people and the docs are nearly impossible to update, so the developers just do whatever, so you have to look at the code to stay interoperable.

I didn't meant that verification is not needed. What I mean is that instead of relying on the code from each client/relay introducing new NIP as a reference implementation, developer first define what they are imolementing and leaving reasoning of their decisions, and then implementing it.

I've had so much grief with self-custody Lightning not being zapable, and people constantly complaining that I can't be zapped, that I was using ecash for throughput, but that turned out to be a mistake.
First, it let me move half the money, and then I tried to move the other half and it wouldn't let me.
No error or information on why not, just spinning, spinning, spinning, for days.
So, I stopped the wallet and updated it.
No improvement.
Spinning, spinning, spinning.
Then, I tried optimizing my proofs (whatever that means, no idea), and the wallet froze up completely because I apparently have 10x as many proofs as the software can handle.
I am, apparently, to be punished for using the wallet frequently and for a long time.
Tried to check, if I can backup or have a seedphrase, but the wallet is frozen.
Find that I have a seedphrase written down. Okay, good.
Stopping and restarting and rebooting the phone, nothing helped. Wallet ded.
Tried recovering from seed, and it moved forward at a glacial pace, recovered a small amount from one mint and none from the others, and then broke off with errors.
Over and over, on the wallet and an online recovery tool. No chance. Error. Error. Error.
I had changed the wallet name, so maybe that changed the seed phrase, so the money is gone, so sucks to be me. Okay, whatever.
Tried the recovery, again, no more errors, but also no more money.
I tried to at least salvage the small amount I'd gotten back out, by sending it on Lightning to a different wallet.
But it deducted it from the Minibits side and just left it in state "Pending", so that it never arrives in the other wallet, and the wallet is now completely frozen again.
I give up.
