I was living in Ramallah, West Bank at the time and had driven into Jerusalem for the day.
It was on Yom Yerushaláyim (Jerusalem Day), an Israeli national holiday that commemorates the "reunification" of East Jerusalem with West Jerusalem following the Six-Day War of 1967, which ended with Israel occupying East Jerusalem and the West Bank. A celebration that marks the holiday is a flag-flying parade known as the Dance of Flags with Jewish Israelis parading through the streets waving Israeli flags, singing, chanting and often taunting passing Palestinians. It’s a day of celebration for Israelis, but obviously tensions often run high and clashes tend to occur.
On the way back through the checkpoint to enter the West Bank, driving in our Israeli plated car (yes there are literally different color license plates to keep people segregated and so soldiers know who to pick on) and there had already been some minor scuffles.
So yeah two white guys pulling through the Qalandiya refugee camp checkpoint in an Israeli car right in the middle of a huge crowd of angry Palestinians… things got heated. And my very basic Arabic was not sufficient to deescalate the situation.
I remember looking through the windows of my car at the screaming faces, realizing they literally wanted to kill us. And then, in the middle of the chaos, right as the stones started to fly and the glass began to shatter – was an old man, an imam, standing quietly and watching the situation unfold. He understood what had happened. It was a case of mistaken identity and that we meant no harm to anyone and had simply found ourselves in the wrong place at the wrong moment.
He let out a single shout in Arabic above the noise and the young men immediately stopped. His presence was immense, though he was completely calm in appearance and speech. He looked at me directly in the eye, said quietly in Arabic: “مع السلامة” (Ma’a-s-salama) “Go with God” and stretched out his arm pointing towards an opening in the crowd.
I took that moment to jump over the median and drive away to safety.

To not accidentally zap while swiping why not press and hold and swipe to cancel?
* short tap = minimum amount. 21sat zap or something.
* tap and hold = amount increases exponentially. ⚡ gets bigger, starts to wiggle, sparks all around, phone vibrates ... and it explodes when reaching some maximum amount (if your cat fell asleep on your phone, although it probably would send the zap when the vibration starts)
* tap and swipe = cancel zap and maybe scroll.

a key phenomenon that is very common here is sudden gusts of wind out of nowhere that are so strong they slam windows and doors
yet sliding windows, doors and shutters are almost nonexistent
there is a few, more modern buildings i've seen with this issue in mind but they are pretty uncommon
fiat real estate and fiat construction, it's a bane of my existence

yeah, my vision is all screwy due to some kidney problem, idk, probably a combination of kidney stones and some early stage spleen/pancreas stuff
and the fucking garbage in the supermarket makes it a lot harder to resolve, artificial sweeteners and modified starches

i just had a comical experience with #mochi the #catstr just now
i put out some of these char grilled beef chunks for him to eat, and the window was open and a bunch of noisy buzzy bumble-flies came in and started harassing him because meat
he fully freaked out over the flies, to the point where he was retreating to the stairs to hide from them while i was trying to locate and eliminate these pieces of shit fucking hate these things also
me and mochi have a lot in common, two things being high sensory acuity
his is typical to the species but he is sick at the moment so like me he is also irritable
yes, the main reason why i'm so bitey and jumpy is because i'm sick, and congrats, assholes, because this means i'm even more determined than ever in my life to purge your shitty arses from existence like i did to the two stupid bumble flies
not necessarily by killing you, that would be a bit weird and excessive, when i can just shut you out
and if it was my property, this cottage, it would have insect screens on every window yesterday, and there would not be flies
we get a few mosqquitoes here, but not many, idk why, probably because it's a bit too cold for their life cycle, but there is some, and they are very annoying when they show up to bug me when i'm sleeping, and leave their injection wounds all over my exposed skin
it was just funny as hell tho, i mean, sad, again, to watch the cat being distressed but funny also because his behaviour was so sympatico to my own feeling towards these pests
me and my mochi are gonna make our own little space in the world, and he is so sympatico to me that he is helping me focus on the important things that make the biggest impacts
you may think it's just some livestock but cats are so intelligent that they can be something even more connected than even dogs emotionally
he learns things so fast, that i just say words now that i have trained him to associate with places and parts of my body and bam he's on it like lightning, when i say his name, and he is asleep, he wakes up and ears point at me and sleepy eyes look towards me
i have a special affinity with cats, i think, because i have top percentile sensory acuity, inherited via my mother's family line
this round of learning how to live with one, which i have aspired to having a cat for a long time, is really coming full circle though, he's teaching me as much as i am teaching him

How do you count how many people add your public key to a list when they don't put that list in a place you generally look at? That's a pretty good one. Nearly impossible, but people like to know.
It's like voodoo. I can stab things in a doll that looks like you across town, but how the heck would you know? That's impossible without magic involved, but at least a follow list exists somewhere that's publicly accessible.

astigmatism is asymmetric prismatic effect right? so your glasses are opposite prisms to reverse it - as in, it alters what looks like the horizon to be higher or lower?
i worked at a health center at one time and i remember many times hearing while in the optics lab where i was assigned to do cleaning glasses ready for the customer, about "prisms" and astigmatism, i think was the reason for it
i don't know, i think yes, because ultimately the optic center of the brain can recalibrate "horizon" which is a composite of visual and proprioception and ear canal sensing stuff
i don't know what the proper way to perform this training might be, but maybe part of it is putting a plano on either side of your eyes first, so get two relatively cheap training glasses for this, and wear them when doing activities where balance and perception of up/down/left/right are important... probably simple stuff like bouncing balls off walls and suchlike
my own vision problems that i only recently developed are further short range focus and double vision, caused by the kidney damage and some secondary thing involving my opto-motor-nerves
fixing this problem i have refused to take the shortcut and use magnifiers, firstly, and these do reduce the double vision poor convergence, but the real cause of it all is really the main thing
so, idk, my feeling is that your brain just hasn't properly adjusted to the mismatch between the eyes, the prismatic distortion and your ear/proprioception, so, yeah
that's my suggestion anyway
please do tell me if i have surmised something that alternative eye health people have been saying for a long time, i just never have had much to do with anyone closely who has issues with astigmatism, or vision probems especially
having had my own recently due to this kidney problem has changed everything though, i hope this gives you some breadcrumbs towards how to heal your vision at least to some extent
nerves have a lot to do with it, as does the brain... but optometrists have one hammer and they use it on everything

been making a bunch of revisions to https://protocol.realy.lol - my "reimagining" of the nostr protocol
still some ways to go before i'm finished revising the message format and i've realised that i need to eliminate message headers for requests with actual RESTful HTTP paths, because these headers on the requests are really redundant if they are tied to a specific "endpoint"
REST doesn't say anything about the use of push-enabling websockets, so it's not quite a REST protocol but for everything that fits that model it's REST
at some point in the day after i have done a bunch of tedious work these days and caring for my kitteh i feel the need to completely break from the routine so i'm going to play some more immersive game than the kingdom 2 crowns i play in between bouts of nostr and work on this stuff
i think i'm getting better at managing two separate streams with my work stuff (did a little bit on it today) and my pet project/#gitcitadel related work
lunch is coming up imminently also, and partly i am becoming aware of this because i'm feeling a bit antsy and my cat is now eating the last bit of beef chunks left in his bowl... i might put another piece on
