I'm back to a bot-free Nostr experience. 🎊🎉🎆 theforest.nostr1.com is awesome.

By the way, just for the sake of pettiness… The last generation of bots all have NIP-05 identities across several domains. Good luck protecting relays from bots by blanket blacklisting domains in 2025. The next step will likely be closed networks of relays, where you can only write with a NIP-05 identity locked behind registration forms. Despite the NIP-05 spec itself stating that it isn’t intended to verify users. I would say "I told you so," but the folks who need to read this won’t anyway.
So, do yourself a favor: host your own personal WoT relay, or get yourself under one. Additionally, use a well-moderated paid relay with a symbolic one time fee. It works better than NIP-05 ever will as a deterrent against bots, while still allowing new nostriches to reach out to you.

Isn't this "by design" 🤣? I mean, in essence they are slurping data from existing repos all over the place. A lot of them will be in Chinese.. And for users and tokens leaking through LLM, this is a known problem.
Did your prompt at least had anything to do with K8s? Or did Cursor just decide that you needed container orchestration? I'm asking because that Claude often "decides" that I need some popular tech. This is why I keep any editing to minimal scope.

@ ee9d979e:3fadff64
2025-03-10 02:16:11
What happens when folks in WoT relays start following bots? 🤣
I've unfollowed several people lately because of this exact problem. I'm starting to think that WoT needs an ownertrust level similar to PGP. Maybe a config file mapping pubkeys to trust levels:
https://gpgtools.tenderapp.com/kb/faq/what-is-ownertrust-trust-levels-explained
As the relay owner, I have "ultimate" ownertrust, meaning if I follow someone, they get write access to the relay.
Everyone I follow directly gets "marginal" trust by default.
If someone I don’t know ("untrusted") is followed by three people I marginally trust, they get write access to my relay (which is basically what you’re already doing in Haven and WoT).
It would be nice to have a couple of additional trust levels though:
Full: I trust utxo not to follow spam bots, so whoever utxo follows gets write access to my relay.
Never: I know someone follows bots, but I don’t want to kick them out of my relay, so their follower data isn’t used for trust calculations (positive or negative).
Reports could work the same way for blacklisting:
Anyone I report as the owner is automatically blacklisted.
Anyone reported by someone I marked as fully trustworthy is also blacklisted.
Anyone reported by three people I marginally trust is blacklisted.
If I mark someone as never to be trusted, their reports are discarded.
What do you think? It sounds more complex than it actually is, and it works well for PGP. Shouldn't be too hard to adapt Haven and WoT to read a new file with custom trust levels.

GM Hoppe. It could work for sure, the main problem with this approach is that kind 1 notes were standardised a long time ago with inlined and signed content. Changing this would require every relay, client, and library to adjust how they handle one of Nostr’s most fundamental kinds.. In other words, it would be like a Python 2 to Python 3 migration (but in a distributed, decentralised) ecosystem. So, IMO, breaking changes like this should be a last resort.
nostr:nprofile1qqsyvrp9u6p0mfur9dfdru3d853tx9mdjuhkphxuxgfwmryja7zsvhqpzamhxue69uhhv6t5daezumn0wd68yvfwvdhk6tcpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qgwwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkctcscpyug's proposal /Amethyst’s implementation uses a new kind 1010 event, which tags the original kind 1 note. The great thing about this approach is that it allows for timestamp versioning. Clients that don’t want to deal with edits can simply ignore kind 1010. The issue, as outlined in Fiatjaf’s article, is that clients must track (i.e., store and cross-reference before displaying) both kinds of events if they want to support edits. In other words, it’s no longer a simple query for kind 1 notes and forget workflow.
GitHub link: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/1090/files
Here’s a good tracker thread for alternative proposals:
GitHub link: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/issues/1569
I’m not sure if it covers all edit proposals, but it links to great discussion on different ways to handle updates, including two alternative proposals by nostr:nprofile1qqsrhuxx8l9ex335q7he0f09aej04zpazpl0ne2cgukyawd24mayt8gprfmhxue69uhkcmmrdd3x77pwve5kzar2v9nzucm0d5hszxnhwden5te0wpuhyctdd9jzuenfv96x5ctx9e3k7mf0qydhwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnhv4ehgetjde38gcewvdhk6tc4rdlnm:
1. A "delete and publish a new note" approach.
2. A method similar to what you’re suggesting, but backwards compatible. Basically it suggests a kind 1 note quoting a new replaceable kind 31000 note.
The PRs and comments in the thread are a great read for anyone trying to understand the issue or suggest/implement alternatives.

Plenty of hard-liners on both sides. Again, fair take, but I disagree. I still prefer to be able to correct my typos. As for folks abusing edits... I’ll just block/mute them.
Same goes for deletion, even though deleting on Nostr is kind of an illusion, given that plenty of relays and clients won’t comply with it. In my view, both editing and deleting are here to stay.
Yes, editing brings its own challenges. No, not every social media platform has this feature. But yes, it can be done right. It can work in social media, and it can even be done in distributed & decentralized platforms (e.g., Mastodon/ActivityPub).
Maybe it can be done in a simpler way (and I’m all for testing and evolving alternative implementations in practice, plus gathering user feedback). The best way to "eliminate" editing is to replace it with a suitable alternative.

Thanks for the Zap! You're doing pretty well for just three days. Aqlready found your way to WoT relays and some pretty good company.
I like your ideas; all worth considering.
That said, Fiatjaf's take on editing on X was sarcastic (Brazilians sense of humor can sometimes go unnoticed when translated to English... Source: am one).
As for influence and consensus on Nostr, I’d say it’s more of a bazaar than a cathedra. There are a few projects that lean more cathedral-like, but they’re the exception rather than the rule. From a macro perspective, though, it's definitely a bazaar. Plus, it doesn’t have a BDFL.
I mean, Fiatjaf is the brain behind the protocol, and without his tools and libraries, devs like me would be screwed. So he’s as close as you’re going to get to that role. Jack brought in some funding and does play a role, but he’s not "in charge" by any means. There are also some influential devs and funding sources, but overall, Nostr development happens in a decentralized fashion, with a mix of collaboration, design, and thought put into NIPs.
There are pros and cons to this model. Consensus is definitely hard. But on the other hand, we have great people agreeing to disagree on a lot of things while still working hard to grow Nostr in their own way. Having been part of both cathedral-style projects and bazaars under a BDFL, I personally enjoy the free-for-all nature of Nostr development. I don’t envy Fiatjaf. It often means herding cats to get things done. But fair play to him: other than making his opinions clear (and occasionally breaking some toys to prove a point 🤣), he really has created a decentralized ecosystem, even in terms of development. Personally, I prefer it this way. :)

We still need something like native Onion Service support, or a smart combination of DDNS like service + hole punching technology to make it more useful on Mobiles. Warning: Long rant (but meant to be informative).
Yes, Amethyst can do it. And fiatjaf is actively campaigning against the way it is implemented because, from his perspective, it’s implemented in a generic and complex way that makes it difficult for other clients to support. This may result in potentially vastly different experiences across clients even for fundamental types such as short notes. The main argument here is that "all powerful" editing capabilities may fractures the Nostr ecosystem. There are plenty of alternative proposals for editing notes, but as far as I know, not much concrete has been done to implement them and gather user feedback.
On the other side, there’s nostr:nprofile1qqsyvrp9u6p0mfur9dfdru3d853tx9mdjuhkphxuxgfwmryja7zsvhqpzamhxue69uhhv6t5daezumn0wd68yvfwvdhk6tcpz9mhxue69uhkummnw3ezuamfdejj7qgwwaehxw309ahx7uewd3hkctcscpyug (Amethyst’s developer), whose argument is basically: It’s useful, and users use it. If they want it, they get it.
Disclaimer: I use this feature myself, just like I edit posts on Mastodon, LinkedIn, Reddit, and a gazillion other places. From a selfish perspective, I’m happy with it. And I also don’t think that not seeing edits on other clients is a big deal for my own use cases. Yeah, zapping a post that originally said “I love kittens” only to see it later changed to “I loathe kittens” somewhere else isn’t great. But I can live with that if it means I can fix my own typos.
Then there’s everyone else: "Nostr influencers" doing whatever they do, folks who want Nostr to be like an "immutable" blockchain, people who oppose edits due to possible abuse (or a myriad of other reasons), and those who love editing and don’t want it taken away. Overall, there are devs supporting both sides, some taking strong stances, others just shrugging it off.
Every few weeks, someone brings this up again. Honestly? Neither side is likely to change their mind. So we’re stuck in an endless debate that will either remain unresolved or be settled by adoption metrics.
My take? Things will likely stay as they are, at least for a while. If they do change, either Amethyst’s editing features will become the de facto standard and other popular clients will slowly adopt it to survive, or a better standard will emerge and Amethyst will have to conform.
Hopefully, this was informative. See you all in a couple of weeks when this topic resurfaces again. :)

Counterpoint: DNS… DNS and domain-wide blacklisting (or, even worse, domain whitelisting behind registration). This is one fragile aspect of Mastodon that I’d rather not see become a thing on Nostr. Unparalleled levels of richness! 🤣 Any reason, technical or otherwise, for not using TheForest as both Inbox and Outbox relays?
My WoT relay is down. My personal relay is only writable to a small group of people, and utxo's WoT, while much more accessible than mine, still won't be reachable to everyone. So my current take on it is this: if folks outside my usual circles really want to reach out to me on Nostr, they should at least pay 300 sats to get write access to your relay first. Is this a bad idea?

Unpleasant disclaimer: If a spam message reaches one of my Personal or WoT relays because an account I’m connected with follows bot accounts, I’ll unfollow it. If I see it following multiple spam bots, I’ll also block it. Even if it’s otherwise a legitimate and nice user.
There are much bigger WoT relays that take a more lenient approach toward users following spam bots. Some relay admins maintain lists of users who follow bots to avoid breaking existing WoT networks. Fair play to those doing this for the good of the larger Nostr community. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time or resources to do the same. Plus, I have a much smaller Nostr network, so my relays aren’t exactly vital Nostr infrastructure.
So, if you were unfollowed or blocked, my apologies. No hard feelings or "power tripping" on my side. It’s just the nature of how WoT works, everyone has to stay vigilant to make it work.

Just to make sure I understand the second sentence, by "there's Pandoc", you mean using it to generate the AsciiDoc contents for each individual kind 30041 content "section" correct? (If I got this right from this link.)
What I was trying to ask is whether there's a tool that, given an entire Markdown or AsciiDoc document (possibly with some metadata comments), it generates both the publication index and content events for me. Or is Alexandria's UI the best way to handle this for now? (Hopefully, my question makes more sense now, sorry if it was unclear!)
Also, one more question if you don’t mind. Is there a group where people are discussi Alexandria, especially its more technical aspects?

I didnt know about Alexandria either. Sounds brilliant. Where can I find the code for Alexandria clients / relays and converters (assuming its all OSS)? And is there a guide on how to convert a document starting from, say, Markdown or AsciiDoc?

Been there myself. Resetting the postmaster password and changing credentials is a PITA. At least you caught the leak early, so hopefully no big bills to pay or issues with Mailgun, spam filters, IP reputation, etc.
By the way, @utxo, I noticed a couple of "GM spam" messages reaching wot.utxo.one (as usual, likely due to legitimate users following bots). I’ve already reported the spam bots.
I know you’re not sharing the, as you put it, "retarded" list publicly for good reasons (I also don’t like the idea of shared moderation lists, especially when the perpetrators aren’t necessarily malicious). But I’m happy to help you maintain it privately if you’d like.

It’s still cheaper than most "brand" watches, and to the casual eye, it still looks like an original cheap Casio. But now, it's built like a tank. It’ll likely last a long, long time.

GM, folks. I want to add a Nostr social media icon to my blog, as well as to some software and platforms under my control. I'm not sure exactly where I'll be linking to (likely njump.me), but before that, the first step is to have a monochromatic SVG icon that works well with both light and dark themes.
Does something like this already exist?
Or is there an "official-ish" Nostr SVG icon under a liberal license? If not, I'm happy to modify one myself. I'll be contributing it upstream to PaperMod and a few other places. I'm also happy to make it available for everyone under CC0 or a similar license.

Fully migrated to IronFox (https://codeberg.org/ironfox-oss/IronFox ). So far, so good. All extensions are running as expected, and I only needed to tweak a couple of settings to prevent sites from breaking.
I’m not sure what Mozilla will or won’t do, but smarter people than me have said that the MPL terms are pretty tight. So, downstream forks likely won’t get in trouble for removing Mozilla’s bloat if it comes to that.

To me, this doesn’t feel like a "crisis averted" or "business as usual" situation, but at least Mozilla is addressing it.
I'm very happy with Zen Browser, and I'm considering switching to IronFox on Android. Folks smarter than me say Firefox’s MPL license makes it pretty safe for forks to remove any data-harvesting code if it comes to that.

Meanwhile, some of my favourite IRC and XMPP-based IM tools from the '90s are still going strong in OSS land. Some can even handle 4K video calls without a hitch nowadays... unlike Microsoft Teams. Go figure. 🤷♂️

Yeah, desperate times, dire financials, and the "Google will just pay us to be the default search engine" gravy train potentially coming to an end... I think the execs at Mozilla are running around like headless chickens right now. I just hope Firefox survives, or at least that Mozilla passes the torch to a new community, just like Mosaic/Netscape did when they created the Mozilla Foundation. ⚠️ SCAM ALERT: ⚠️ Be careful with technical tests, especially when approached about crypto-related job opportunities.
I'm resharing this repo containing information about recruitment related crypto scams.
🔗 Repo: https://github.com/rubenmarcus/malicious-repositories
It’s maintained by Ruben Marcus Luz Paschoarelli (LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rubenmarcus/ ).
Apparently rhere's an entire industry dedicated to scamming dev wallets (and potentially grabbing some juicy production keys in the process). It’s not just high-profile exchange heists. Plenty of scammers are hunting for low-hanging fruit on platforms like LinkedIn.
Got a technical assessment? No problem. Do it in an ephemeral, air-gapped environment. Never run unfamiliar code anywhere near your wallets, nodes or crypto infrastructure.
This may seem like a basic security measure, but scammers wouldn’t keep doing this if developers weren’t falling for it. Stay safe.

Sim.
