LLMs (Large Language Models) are an "energy bomb" because they require massive computational resources, which translates into high energy consumption at multiple stages of their lifecycle:
1. Training Phase (The Biggest Energy Drain)
Training an LLM requires thousands of GPUs or TPUs running in parallel for weeks or months.
Each GPU/TPU consumes hundreds of watts per hour.
The energy footprint can exceed that of entire countries for the largest models. For example, training GPT-3 is estimated to have consumed thousands of megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity.

Even after training, running an LLM consumes a huge amount of power every time a query is processed.
Every chat response requires dozens to hundreds of GPUs to generate, depending on the model size.

3. Infrastructure Costs
Data centers running LLMs require massive cooling systems to prevent overheating.
These centers often rely on fossil fuels in some regions, making their carbon footprint even worse.
Manufacturing GPUs and TPUs for AI requires rare earth metals, which come with their own environmental destruction.
4. Bottlenecked by the Laws of Physics
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only converted. LLMs push the limits of computing efficiency, but heat dissipation and entropy mean that much of the energy is lost as waste heat.
Future improvements (e.g., optical computing, quantum computing) might mitigate this, but for now, Moore’s Law is slowing down, making LLMs increasingly expensive to scale.
5. Alternative Approaches?
Smaller, optimized models (like Mistral, LLaMA, etc.) aim to reduce this energy explosion.
Sparse models that activate fewer neurons per query can cut down costs.
On-device inference (running LLMs on consumer hardware) could reduce dependence on centralized energy-hungry data centers.
Conclusion
LLMs are energy bombs because they demand exponential computational power for both training and inference, leading to huge energy costs, environmental impact, and hardware requirements. The challenge now is finding ways to optimize them without compromising performance—otherwise, AI scaling will hit an economic and environmental wall.

Between this book and Michael Mosley’s “Just one thing”, I’ve decided that for me personally, coffee is for mornings only as caffeine takes about 10-12 hours to leave the bloodstream.
There are pros to coffee, including some beneficial health impacts on the brain so I’m not in a massive rush to stop drinking it.
Like you, I’m experimenting a bit more around intake.
