In Oostenrijk lijken de gesprekken over een coalitie zonder de radicaal-rechtse FPÖ alsnog tot een coalitieakkoord te leiden. Eerder liepen de onderhandelingen tussen de liberale NEOS-partij, de conservatieve ÖVP en de sociaaldemocratische SPÖ vast.
De drie partijleiders hebben president Van der Bellen in zijn kantoor geïnformeerd over de vooruitgang in de coalitieonderhandelingen. "We hebben een gezamenlijke basis gevonden en we gaan erin slagen een regeerakkoord te sluiten", zei ÖVP-partijleider Stocker na afloop van het overleg tegen Oostenrijkse media.
SPÖ-partijleider Babler zei dat de drie grootste middenpartijen de laatste fase van onderhandelingen hebben bereikt.
De drie partijen proberen al maanden zonder succes een coalitie te smeden en de FPÖ buiten de regering te houden. Begin januari trokken de partijen de stekker uit de onderhandelingen. Een struikelblok waren afspraken over de begroting.
Het mislukken van de gesprekken was voor toenmalig bondskanselier Nehammer aanleiding om zijn ontslag in te dienen. Ook trok hij zich terug als partijleider van de ÖVP.
FPÖ uitgesloten
De radicaal-rechtse FPÖ werd in september voor het eerst de grootste partij bij de parlementsverkiezingen. Toch gaf president Van der Bellen opdracht aan de conservatieve ÖVP om tot een nieuwe regering te komen, omdat de andere partijen hadden gezegd niet met de FPÖ te willen samenwerken. Daarmee brak hij met de traditie om de leider van de grootste partij daarvoor te vragen.
Na de stukgelopen onderhandelingen vroeg Van der Bellen FPÖ-leider Kickl alsnog om een regering samen te stellen. Onderhandelingen tussen de FPÖ en de ÖVP verliepen moeizaam en liepen na vijf weken op niets uit.
