The Latin American smartphone market grew 15% in 2024 compared to 2023, according to new data released by Canalys. 2024 shipments were 137 million units, an absolute record in the region.
Samsung reigned supreme with 42.9 million shipments for a 31% market share with 12% annual shipment growth. It was followed by Motorola with 22.8 million shipments, 17% market share, and a 4% decline compared to 2023. In third was Xiaomi, incredibly close to Motorola at 22.7 million units shipped and also 17% market share. Xiaomi's sales did grow 20% year-on-year.

Why are there so many bright blue stars? Stars are usually born in clusters, and the brightest and most massive of these stars typically glow blue. Less-bright, non-blue stars like our Sun surely also exist in this M41 star cluster but are harder to see. A few bright orange-appearing red giant stars are visible. The red-light filaments are emitted by diffuse hydrogen gas, a color that was specifically filtered and enhanced in this image. In a hundred million years or so, the bright blue stars will have exploded in supernovas and disappeared, while the slightly different trajectories of the fainter stars will cause this picturesque open cluster to disperse. Similarly, billions of years ago, our own Sun was likely born into a star cluster like M41, but it has long since drifted apart from its sister stars. The featured image was captured over four hours with Chilescope T2 in Chile.

男性が車で女性をはねる、1年後に2人は結婚＝中国ネット「理解できない」
中国・湖南省益陽市で交通事故の加害者と被害者が結婚するという出来事があった。
30代半ばの男性・李さんは2023年12月8日、自動車を運転していた際に急ぐあまり
スピードを出し過ぎ、交差点で電動バイクに乗っていた女性をはね飛ばした。
李さんは「ドンッという音がして、何が起こったのか分かりませんでした。ブレーキを
踏んだ時にはすでに100メートルほど進んでいて、そこでようやく停車して、頭が真っ白になりました。
パニックになり、救急車や警察に電話することもできず、周囲の人が通報してくれました」と振り返った。
李さんが女性のもとに駆け寄り「申し訳ありません」と謝罪すると、女性はすぐに
「大丈夫です」と返事をした。
李さんは「その瞬間、この子はきっと誠実で優しい人なんだと感じました。この子なら、
事故のことで私を責めたり、お金を要求したりしないだろうと思いました」と語った。
女性は鎖骨を骨折して入院した。李さんは警察と共に病院へ向かう前に、お見舞いの品として
果物や牛乳を購入していった。女性の両親も李さんを強く責めたてることはなく、
「娘をちゃんと治療してくれればそれでいい。（慰謝料などの）お金は要らない」
と言ったそうで、李さんはこの態度にも感動したという。
記事によると、李さんの両親は李さんの運転を心配していた。それまでの2カ月間で5回も
事故を起こしていたのがその理由だという。李さんは親に心配をかけまいと運転を控え、
女性の見舞いのため病院通いをするようになったとのこと。
李さんは毎日病院に行き、女性の朝食を持参したり、身の回りの世話をしたりして、
夜遅くまで付き添った。「朝早く起きても特にやることがなく暇だったので、病院へ行って
彼女に朝食を届けたり、必要なものを買ってあげたりしていました。
自然と会話をするようになり、お互いのことを話すようになったんです」と李さん。
会話を重ねるうちに、女性が2002年生まれで地元のタピオカミルクティーの店で
働いていることを知った。
李さんの献身的な介助に好感を覚えたのか、同年12月28日に女性の方から李さんに告白。
「私はあなたが好きです。手術前、不安だと伝えた時、あなたは『楽しいことを考えて』と言いました。
私の楽しいことは、あなたが遊びに連れて行ってくれること…。たった数日しか話していないのに、
私はあなたを好きになってしまいました」とのメッセージを送信した。
しかし、李さんはすぐに返信しなかったという。「恋愛なんて全く考えていなかったし、何より
年齢差が大きすぎる。たとえ私が受け入れても、彼女の両親が許さないだろう」。しかし女性は
「自分の人生は自分で決める。好きな人には素直に気持ちを伝えたい。たとえ可能性がなくても、
言わなければ後悔する」と思い、あきらめなかった。
最初は女性を避けがちだった李さんも、徐々に女性の想いに向き合うように。そして、女性の
提案で一緒に映画を観に行ったことをきっかけに2人は正式に交際をスタートさせた。
24年9月、女性の妊娠が判明したことで、李さんは結婚を決意。
25年2月6日に李さんの故郷で結婚式を挙げたという。
