So the ByBit attack was able to happen because:
Gnosis Safe front end is a web app whose JavaScript gets served from an Amazon S3 bucket.
A Gnosis Safe developer had production AWS keys saved on their machine.
The Dev's machine was compromised and the AWS key used to deploy a malicious front end that only targeted ByBit's wallet.
JavaScript web apps have no cryptographic integrity checks to ensure the code being delivered was actually written by the expected author.
Signing complex EVM transactions can't be done securely on airgapped hardware because the hardware simply doesn't have all of the contextual information needed to know the outcome of executing the transaction.

I see on chain Bitcoin as the equivalent of RTGS the Real Time Gross Settlement process for bank to bank payments which runs at maximum 9 transactions per second, but typically 4-5.

The wallet that assembled the transaction is a web wallet. Months ago, the web wallet's host, Amazon S3, was breached and a single JavaScript file was slightly modified from the original source code, which is available for everybody to see. The modification changes the recipient ONLY when ByBit's cold wallet is being used.
ByBit then took the assembled version with the malicious code and signed with all their multisig cold signers without verifying that the receiving address has been changed to the attacker.

For me the main argument is, storing every transaction on the main chain requires servers in a data centre.
This means it's going to be run by a company and therefore subject to local government whims and can be shut down.
Ironically, even VISA face this, they only keep transactions for around 6 - 12 months. Keeping them longer would require enormous storage and data costs.
They lost a battle with, I believe the EU, who wanted them to keep records for longer as part of AML, which is why VISA fees are rising.

This is going to start a fun transatlantic flame war:
I hate mixer taps (faucets).
With separate taps, the cold water tap is cold and the hot water tap is hot. If you want them mixed, then combine them in the bowl.
Almost every day, I burn my hand by turning on the cold tap and getting hot water flowing out because a family member has just finished running the mixer tap to produce hot water, which is still in the pipes.
It’s not a massive rant, I’m not going to sue anyone or campaign against mixer taps, but let the war begin:

What if the malicious client sends an invisible DM to the attacker not only with your nsec but with also your Nostr Wallet Connect secret?
Since you are not verifying your zaps out, they can just slowly drain your funds forever.

Damn. Bybit just released a report: the compromise was not Bybit, but on the open source wallet they were using from third-party servers. They hot swapped the Gnosis SAFE UI in production with JS code that ONLY targeted Bybit's cold wallet.

It doesn't need to be cash-flow positive, but some cash should be transfered.
For instance, we ask for users to commit a given amount of sats as a reward for fixing a bug or putting a new feature on Amethyst. They can offer anything, even 1 sat.
But if they offer nothing and delete the text that asks them for, I don't even pay attention to the issue.
If they don't care enough to put something up, then I also don't care.
