Because NATO is not an economic union, but a miliary one. And while military unions are defensive in nature, enemy nations can't be sure of that (it's called the security dilemma). And NATO weaponry went into these countries, which even Kissinger (who was pro NATO expansion) argued we shouldn't do.

This "don't reward bad behavior" argument, which I've heard countless times now, is super weak. Because Russia has lost hundreds of thousands of men. They paid dearly so far for this war (but not as much as Ukraine). You think that they will say "that was easy we didn't get punished, so let's go do it again?" No, the cost of this war was so high already that we don't have to make it even more costly to avoid moral hazard. I'm sure it is already clear to all would-be aggressors that the cost of aggression is super high.

Do you understand why Russia is "our" enemy?
From the perspective of a soldier, the enemy is the enemy and you don't ask why. But from the perspective of leaders and diplomats, relationships are hyper complex, and friend/enemy don't cut it anymore. And anyhow, even if you thought of Russia as an enemy, that needs to always be re-evaluated.
So why should Russia remain an enemy?
From a geopolitical strategic perspective, according to John Mearsheimer, it would have been far better to get Russia on the US side of the ledger so that US and Russia together could contain China.

using podcastfy (python lib) I just created a workflow where I can turn any url, pdf or youtube video into a custom ai-generated podcast. it even generates an rss feed so I can listen on my phone via fountain when I'm out and about.
I just pointed it at my relatively empty website to see what would happen:
