what we have here is a visualization over n iterations for probability of change for each bit. different colors represent values of each bit, so we have 256 different bit values to track over iterations. perfect hash function is a function where output bits change by exactly 0.5 probability for any change in input. such hash function does not exist however, because hash functions are based on pseudo randomness, ie programmed changes in bits.
when we find a pattern from the probabilities that differ from the ideal probability 0.5, it opens a weakness in hashing function.

comparison is cumulative, ie full history is compared. thats why it gets more stable over time.
however it is expected to never reach stable 0.5 probability, because that would be true randomness.

to begin with breaking sha256, we need to find statistically significant pattern in probabilities of bit changes in output.
here is llm assisted code that calculates these probabilities. its not checked that well so it may or may not be correct. at least should work for starting point.
//
import hashlib
CHECK_INTERVAL = 10000
def sha256_binary(input_bytes):
sha256_hash = hashlib.sha256()
sha256_hash.update(input_bytes)
return sha256_hash.digest()
def calculate_bit_change_probability(results, curr_result):
num_bits = len(curr_result) * 8
bit_change_count = [0] * num_bits
for result in results:
int_list1 = list(result)
int_list2 = list(curr_result)
xor_int_list = [a ^ b for a, b in zip(int_list1, int_list2)]
xor_bytes = bytes(xor_int_list)
xor_result = int.from_bytes(xor_bytes, byteorder='big')
for i in range(num_bits):
if (xor_result >> i) & 1:
bit_change_count[i] += 1
total_comparisons = len(results)
probabilities = [count / total_comparisons for count in bit_change_count]
return probabilities
def main():
results = []
i = 0
while True:
i += 1
input_bytes = i.to_bytes((i.bit_length() + 7) // 8, byteorder='big')
hash_result = sha256_binary(input_bytes)
if (i + 1) % CHECK_INTERVAL == 0:
probabilities = calculate_bit_change_probability(results, hash_result)
print(f"Iteration {i}: Bit change probabilities:")
print(f"{', '.join([str(p)[:7] for p in probabilities])}")
results.append(hash_result)
main()

here are top two candidates who will break sha256:
- extremely talented mathematician or programmer
- asic manufacturer or crypto miner who hires someone with understanding of probability theory
latter may lack financial incentive for breaking crypto, but its the most probable if such incentive appears.

“Whether the combativeness of British voters on Russia is matched by a willingness to pay more is the dilemma facing Sir Keir. The government insists taxes will not rise. The alternative is spending cuts in other departments, which would anger voters. Politics is the art of solving such contradictory whims. The geopolitical problems are immovable; the obstacles on tax are entirely self-imposed. Britons will not choose between nlaws and the nhs. Labour must offer both.”

If a block cipher or cryptographic hash function does not exhibit the avalanche effect to a significant degree, then it has poor randomization, and thus a cryptanalyst can make predictions about the input, being given only the output. This may be sufficient to partially or completely break the algorithm.
read: if you can repeat the experiment enough times to find the repeating pattern you can solve reverse the hash function. question is always about how many interations need to be run so that the difference from 0.5 appears.

"Changing a single bit causes each bit in the output to change with 50% probability, demonstrating an avalanche effect"
this statement on wikipedia page of blake2 is pseudo truth. it may be if the number 0.500000001 is rounded.
however exact 50 % probability of event would implicate true randomness. however even physicists dont believe in existence of randomness.
when probability differs from 50 %, that is where the unlocking pattern can be found.

"surely if we run this obfuscation function that does not work, but if we run it more interations its obfuscated enough"

ceo: we need to make sure that only those who have the correct key can access this information
cryptographer: sure, lets add some more obfuscation

So the "cold" wallet was on a website? Fuck that mean?
And can't ethereum do multisig properly? Wtf?
Like.. I don't understand why this is an eth problem? Couldn't they have stolen their Bitcoin just the same?

it was the most disrupting event of humankind. all information security was broken.
cryptography literally translates to "the writing in secret code.". and cryptographers already knew it way before. they had always known it. it was all about writing in code that was hard to understand. but in the end, one way functions did not really exist. it was just a false hope, it was a dream of mathematicians, and it created a whole industry, information processing, which eventually evolved into all industries accross the world economy, it was simply too large to fail.
yet, it was all based on confusion, on obfuscated secret code. but the code had the pattern from the beginning, and even first cryptographers understood the code to unlock the pattern existed, yet it was not known, at least not by many.
in 2039 first speculations leaked that some organizations hold theories of how all information security could be broken. many conspiracy theories were spread on the internet, but in january 2043 something happened. a major breakages in almost all internet traffic started to happen and just a few hours later, at almost same instant, stock markets and cryptocurrencies crashed by 99 %. it was the beginning of the end of all information technology as we knew it.
since then, cryptography has been mostly referred as a religion and pseudo security. still some try to invent secure algorithms, despite the proofs that one-way functions do not exist.

Glad you like it! I started by going through the info at cashu.space.
Then I checked out numbnoot by Gandlaf, which gives a great interactive overview of how it all works: https://numbnoot.gandlaf.com
Then I started diving in to the cashu-ts library, but if you are not a developer, then probably the good next steps are:
1) Register an Nostrly or npub.cash nickname, use it as your Nostr Lightning address. That way your zaps will appear as Cashu tokens.
2) You can then withdraw the tokens to a wallet, like Cashu.me. Or use my tool to send them elsewhere as needed.
3) If you use Cashu.me, you can then connect it back to your Nostr client using NWC.
That way, you can play with receiving, holding and spending / xapping with ecash. You can even send ecash tokens to people by DM or email.
Ecash is cool 😉
