just added note broadcasting to #notedeck because of a specific reason:
I had some notes on my laptop that were not on my desktop. I enabled multicast-only on both nodes and broadcasted the note.
This copied the note from my laptop to my desktop over the local network. these nodes did not have to connect to each other! it just worked.
There's no reason I can't write some code that broadcasts all my notes over multicast at the press of a button. This would back up all my notes to every other notedeck node on the network! This is a bit of a hack until I get negentropy syncing between notedeck nodes, but its simple!
I think it would be cool if there was a "broadcast to multicast" button for copying notes to other nostr nodes on your network without them going to external relays.

In any case, this comes from the #FATF and they're pushing that stuff globally. The EU does it slightly different from the UK, but most of the variation is in how companies enforce it. It sounds like Revolut picked the most shitty way.
It often boils down to cost: if forcing users to send coins back is cheaper than filling out some compliance paperwork, then that's what some companies will do. Especially the kind that doesn't give a fuck about its customers. Just keep in mind that isn't "just the law".

It's actually not different as military tech advances drive infrastructure investment. The Autobahn, for instance, was invented to move tanks. The Romans built sturdy roads and bridges, and invented logistics, to move their armies faster. AI, satellite, and drone tech is advancing so quickly because of the Ukraine war. A lot of medical advancement comes from battlefield hospitals.
And etc. Even a lot of seemingly peaceful advancement, like Bitcoin and Nostr, are effectively a form of libertarian insurrection or covert guerilla warfare. Peacetime doesn't lead to invention or infrastructure improvements, it leads to widespread sloth, atrophy, and decadence.
That's where the "hard times make strong men" meme comes from. Those who fight, build. There are only the quick and the dead.
