purplepag.es is not the center of the universe. All popular and semi-popular relays should be used for writing your kind 10002 event (could be hundreds of relays). And several should be used for reading from... if those several are popular and people are writing everywhere it should work. So I should be able to read from einundzwanzig or nos.lol or relay.damus.io, or any other popular relay and find everybody's 10002 events. And if those fall down I can read from whatever becomes popular in the future. So nothing is an achilles heel. Nobody should be hard coding relays for this purpose.
That being said, the "spray it everywhere" solution was intended as a stopgap for the moment, and the DHT solution does appeal to me.

In my opinion:
The DHT backend of PKARR is useful and I would suggest it for nostr except for a few problems
1. It breaks the rule of only one way of doing something,
2. DHT interface code is not "simple" like the rest of nostr is
3. There might not be many libraries to use for DHT interface code.
As for PKARR itself, the DNS part doesn't help us, and in fact complicates things quite a lot. I understand why pubky wants it and likes it (they are using pubkeys as websites, and browsers already look up in DNS), but for nostr we should bypass that part if we were to use mainline DHT.
The fundamental purpose of kind 10002 (declaring a person's relays) remains necessary and PKARR does not change this. The "gossip model" doesn't go away, it just may have a different way of bootstrapping (e.g. instead of searching on popular relays for the 10002 event, you look up the data in Mainline DHT).
BTW: This was already implemented and working in Mosaic (which is idle).

Capital, especially if supply-capped, must at some point be deployed whether a person likes it or not; we can't live our lives without spending. And if anything, people hoarding appreciates the capital stock of 'smaller' individuals. It's a virtuous NGU cycle.
There's definitely a centralization risk when it comes to data storage, but tools are already being developed and exist to make self-hosting seamless and easy even for non-technical people. Local relays like Citrine on Android are also a great solution to this. The main hurdle to overcome imo is changing consumer behavior to a direction where users feel comfortable paying for these services and/or the associated hosting costs.

Yet relying on the relays might be more prone to surveillance.
External routers may be better than relays doing to mixing.

I honestly don't remember what brought me to Nostr. It was probably a podcast, but I couldn't tell you which one. I came in with no real appreciation for what this meant, but I enjoy tinkering with stuff, so learning kept me around to focus on something other than my undergrad. I stay because I learn something new about sovereignty, tech, Bitcoin, food, and many other topics constantly.
If a few of years ago someone would have told me I'd end up being a Bitcoin node and nostr relay running, home mining maxi who bathes using beef tallow as soap and lotion purchased with bitcoin over lightning, and eats multiple locally raised, grassfed steaks a day, I wouldn't have believed you. This community changed me.
