The reason for going to the press is to communicate to your target demographic.
It's one thing to make a splash. It's another to make a splash that results in a repeat sales.
If you're aiming at devs, this idea could work. I would combine it with various projects, including the simplest ones. That way, you're appealing to vetran and junior devs alike. The masses won't get the message, but if you're aiming at devs, masses aren't your target demographic.

I was thinking gimmicks more for press coverage rather than actually for people/actual users. I think you could have a gimmick which presents nostr as a place you can just try stuff and build. That would be the more serious message. The gimmick would be more of a demo video of a possibility. But I am also not mega serious about this.

Gimmicks aren't good marketing, at least according to my battlefield-seasoned professor of Marketing 101. I learned more from that class than most of all my other college courses combined (excluding my later CS courses). His experience in the field made for a course jammed full of practical information.
One of the main principles he taught was that marketing is "providing the customer what they want at a profit". For Nostr, (since it is not a business itself), I would say that our profit is measured in:
"retained users that encourage others to join"
Gimmicks are similar to rugging. "Come in for the gimmick, then learn what it's REALLY about." is setting a false representation as a pitch.
The main roads to follow are:
- Highlighting the benefits
- Providing workarounds for deficiencies
- Highlighting what makes your product/service different from all other options. Differentiating your product/service is one the most key elements of marketing. If you can't do this, your "sales" are the result of a coin toss at best, (and that's only if your competitors failed at showcasing their uniqueness)
Another key aspect is to identify the demographic(s) of your target customer. I don't see 3D environments being directly related to Nostr currently. I don't know of any 3D/FPS gamers asking for a decentralized permissionless communication platform.
I think the current demographic to focus on are people/groups that frequently face censorship, that don't require anonymity. One of the best groups I can think of are firearms enthusiasts. Another are people in the field of psychedelic therapy. These groups get censored and shadow-banned on platforms frequently, and they have value to share. We've attracted a few doctors, and I hope to see more. Maybe the scientific community that has found data that counters the narratives presented by corporations would be another. Gimmicks would only turn these people to other avenues.
This doesn't mean the idea of 3D games/environments for Nostr should be ignored. When they provide a benefit to the target demographic, then it's time to go full throttle.

Because I see which episodes get the most traction. Bitcoiners may say they want “different guests and opinions” on Bitcoin podcasts, but their actions tell a very different story… The numbers are clear. That’s why even though Saylor has done 69,420 podcasts and everyone has listened to countless hours of him, the majority of people will still watch any new Saylor conversation over some lesser-known person. This isn’t a dig on Saylor, it’s just reality.

it was the most disrupting event of humankind. all information security was broken.
cryptography literally translates to "the writing in secret code.". and cryptographers already knew it way before. they had always known it. it was all about writing in code that was hard to understand. but in the end, one way functions did not really exist. it was just a false hope, it was a dream of mathematicians, and it created a whole industry, information processing, which eventually evolved into all industries accross the world economy, it was simply too large to fail.
yet, it was all based on confusion, on obfuscated secret code. but the code had the pattern from the beginning, and even first cryptographers understood the code to unlock the pattern existed, yet it was not known, at least not by many.
in 2039 first speculations leaked that some organizations hold theories of how all information security could be broken. many conspiracy theories were spread on the internet, but in january 2043 something happened. a major breakages in almost all internet traffic started to happen and just a few hours later, at almost same instant, stock markets and cryptocurrencies crashed by 99 %. it was the beginning of the end of all information technology as we knew it.
since then, cryptography has been mostly referred as a religion and pseudo security. still some try to invent secure algorithms, despite the proofs that one-way functions do not exist.
