My Journey To Bitcoin
I’m 47. Outside of my unrelaized carry in our portfolio companies nearly 90% of my liquid net worth is in BTC (ok maybe 80% BTC and 10% MSTR).
I use to be the poster child for Trad-Fi. Ivy League MBA and trained in Keynesian economics. Worked in Investment Banking at JPMorgan and witnessed the 2008 collapse and effects of money printing first hand.
For the last 7 years I’ve run a lower mid market PE shop and the effects of the monetary policy during the pandemic and the near 600 basis point rate increase in a span of 9 months and the cash impact of that on our levered portfolio companies (yes a few of them failed) was another moment of realization that the system I was trained in just doesn’t work.
Finally decided to humble myself and put in over 300 hours and relearn EVERYTHING I knew about economics and hard money even though it conflicted with everything I learned in my successful 16 year career on Wall Street / Private Equity.
The Result of The Inquiry: Came to a clear realization that Bitcoin is a once in a 1000 year phenomenon and is the Hardest Money ever created. AND even in my best years as an investor I can’t beat Bitcoin’s 4 year average returns. That was humbling.

So this turned out to be total bullshit.
When I ran a computer store we had a monthly draw for customers to win a laptop. Nothing extravagant but we got email submissions tallied up contestants and I would use a random number generator to figure out who won. Some months we would have maximum 40 contestants and sometimes just 10. One lady won twice.
It was simple. Then the customer was contacted and they came to the store and I gave them the laptop.

I've reached reached out to Fountain here and the only responses were in the 4th of January.
So I'm cancelling my fountain subscription and I'll just use another V4V podcast app.
This is so dumb. I honestly can't be mad because I've been very similar in communication at one time or another. I still always felt though that customers were important. One thing I can do is not pay them anymore.
I don't know about the other contestants but I've seen way too much shady behavior in Bitcoin and it's no different than it was 4 years ago. Over worked and under paid, I get it.

I get an impression as if the whole story shows the creation of the two extremes, almost as if it was a conversation or a debate happening within God itself, illustrated metaphorically.
Then ultimately Jesus shows the middle way.
In terms of what is too reckless/just enough, I think recklessness comes from engaging in ego-driven activity while forgetting that it’s ultimately an illusion. Following your heart might be fine as long as you remain aware of its absurdity and deception. Just as playing a video game is fine as long as you don’t confuse it with base reality. That also allows you to know when to stop based on your own judgement. A judgement rooted in awareness not ego.

First off, big shoutout to Coinos for having support for adding a memo to BOLT12 offers. This provides a solid alternative for the pleb who wants to support mining decentralization but doesn’t want to set up a CLN node and pay thousands of sats for a channel only to get little rewards. This is the case for most of us who only have a miner or two (e.g. a Bitaxe and/or an S9).
Before we get into setting up Lightning payouts, you’ll want to have your miner configured to mine with OCEAN of course. You’ll also want to make sure that the bitcoin address you use is from a wallet that supports signing messages.

Jeff, I listened to this interview and you drew a distinction between how you handle your own finances (hodl, live mostly on a bitcoin standard) and how you think about the market as a fund manager.
I’m curious why you wouldn’t apply the same strategies you’d use in your fund to deliver a positive return in your own finances.
I agree that the vast majority of people are better off not trying to time the market. Per Odell, stay humble and stack sats. That’s sound advice.
But you’re an experienced fund manager who is responsible for eyeing liquidity like a hawk and devising strategies to lock in returns and avoid massive/lengthy drawdowns.
Is it a matter of principle? A mix of other considerations?
