Alby Hub is not for everyone. If you don't want to run a dedicated full Bitcoin node and LND, then you have to be okay with the tradeoffs of trusting Alby's node for all on-chain data, and channel opening and closing. You know... Just like any other self-custody Lightning "wallet" that isn't running on top of your own stack, like Phoenix, Zeus' Olympus node-on-a-phone, or Mutiny before they shut down.
There is no perfect solution. They all have trade-offs and we just have to determine which ones we are okay with.

Sure they can't hold your funds, or spend them, but they do get to control some portion of your ability to send/receive them. I don't know that it's fair to say that what defines a custodial service who's holding your private key.
A cloud VPS service is custodial because it handles hardware provisioning and networking for me.
A DNS provider is custodial because technically it's possibly to host your own name servers
My ISP is custodial because it also does networking and routing for me as a service.

I actually cover this downside of many Alby Hub versions in my recent article here:
nostr:naddr1qqxnzdenxymrjdejx5envdfnqgstwf6d9r37nqalwgxmfd9p9gclt3l0yc3jp5zuyhkfqjy6extz3jcrqsqqqa28sfc4f2
My recommended setup is using it paired with your Start9, Umbrel, or other LND node.
As far as what it offers, I also cover that in the article.

Something to throw in here too, to my knowledge, your hub has to be connecting to some 3rd party chain state validation servers (bitcoin nodes) to see the blockchain, it's not validating transactions locally. (it does not do an initial block download) Which means DNS poison or possibly malicious nodes (whatever method they use to connect to nodes). I believe they support connecting to LND which would allow you to bypass this, which I'd highly recommend. But if you're running LND and Bitcoin Core in a full node already, what are they offering? A GUI?

No disagreement there! That still doesn't mean Alby Hub is custodial. You still hold the keys to your funds.

Absolutely! That's a very different thing from not holding the keys to funds you already have, which is the traditional definition of self-custody vs custodial.

When alby serves an invoice from lnurl you can't be sure they're not maliciously serving their own invoices instead of yours, intercepting some of your payments for themselves
Of course they would never, but that's what he means. Still a lot of trust

If Alby wanted to do so, they could change derekross@getalby.com to point to any LNURL and wallet. I'd never know until it was too late. I'm not saying they will ever do this, but it could absolutely happen. It's just a server config file. A rouge systems administrator could point it to their wallet if they wanted to do so.

If you have no interest in the responsibility of managing your own liquidity, which is part and parcel with self-custody Lightning, then Alby Hub may not be the option for you.
That does mean you will be using custodial options, though. Coinos is the one I would currently recommend. Close behind that would be MiniBits.

That may be, as I have never purchased a channel via Alby Hub. I had my channels already set up in LND prior to installing it on my Start9.
That said, there is nothing in Alby Hub requiring you to buy channels from them, regardless of which version you are using. Just go to your Node tab, click on Open Channel, then go to the advanced options and for Channel Peer choose Custom. This allows you to put in the node ID of any peer you would like.

Nice summary and this is kind of my take away also. It’s hard to explain since it has so many options on how to run it but running it on a node is the best option in my opinion.
You can also use #AlbyHub in several podcasting 2.0 apps like Podverse Curiocaster Castamatic LNBeats PodcastGuru. These aren’t Nostr apps so people don’t seem to care around here but if you spend all that time setting up AlbyHub why not try it out in a podcast app?

Yes, but when you do this, you are NOT using Zeus's self-custody node - on - the - phone. You are essentially just using Zeus as a mobile interface for your Umbrel or Start9 node.
We have been talking about trying to use the node-on-a-phone option from Zeus with Alby Hub. To my knowledge, there is no way to do this.

Yes indeed its a great solution, btw when i create in albyhub a private connection is it possible within the hub to put in a balance or is it only possible from a wallet outside the hub?

We put a lot of work in making it easy for everybody to take control over their own bitcoin with Alby Hub. More improvements coming soon. Zeus is a great LSP in Alby Hub.

#albyhub (albyhub.com) solved offline receiving which is great for receiving zaps 24/7.
You can use it for free on Umbrel or Start9. You can connect your Alby account to Zeus and use Zeus to pay on the go.

So... That may improve your self-custodial Zeus wallet/node's liquidity, but it doesn't do anything to enable Alby Hub's features for your Zeus wallet/node.

Ah. In that case, as stated elsewhere, just open a lightning channel with Alby, or any node, from Zeus. Look up node addresses on 1m.com

Not necessarily zeus comes with sn embedded node in their app but thats different to the one you connect toom your node, within the alby hub there are some LSPs are recommended even for smaller amounts which serve well as an initial node connection

I read the verses, thanks for sharing but I don’t understand. Adam brought sin into the world and Jesus takes away sin but my question is God made Adam and Jesus, why are they not brothers since they are both of his creation. Adam was a man and Jesus was a man once. Is what separates them sin?

I am also a non-dispen myself (Reformed Baptist). Out of curiosity, as a Presbyterian, are you more in the idealist or partial-preterist camp? Some guys in our church are exploring Bitcoin and also discuss the classic Reformed Amil view of Revelation and the resurgence of the partial Preterist and Post Mil views. This certainly makes them more willing to learn about Bitcoin as they are not worried about taking on some satanic mark or losing salvation.

Using the connection string given in the wallet set up, it will connect to the wallet you just set up on your node and anything sent to that Alby Lightning address will go to that new wallet, too.
