起诉书显示，2024年9月4日凌晨，被告人李某春酒后与妻子吴某莉因感情纠纷在其经营的白水县杜康镇“攒劲面馆”西边卧室发生争吵。李某春使用钢尺、皮带、菜刀等工具对吴某莉实施了殴打行为，后用面汤浇灌并将其拖入锅中，致其背部、小腿等部位多处受伤。经鉴定，吴某莉系面汤误吸入呼吸道致死。
2月18日，家属向记者介绍，李某春曾提过离婚，2024年8月夫妻俩吵架，双方亲友劝解后，二人带孩子外出旅游，大家以为他们和好了。案发前6天，李某春疑似打骂吴某莉，吴家一位长辈因此曾去面馆调解。
吴某莉的母亲对记者回忆，2024年9月4日凌晨，李某春分别给她打了两次电话。吴母称，4日凌晨3时许，女婿第一次给她打电话，让她去面馆，“女婿说‘我跟你女儿吵架了，明天去离婚’，我说‘这么晚了，明天你们还要做生意，早点睡别闹了’，女婿就把电话挂了。”吴母以为夫妻俩因小事吵架，没当回事，睡下了。4日凌晨5时许，吴母再次接到女婿的电话，女婿只说了一句“你女儿快不行了”。吴母挂掉电话，叫上老伴赶到面馆时看到，女儿倒在厨房里，胳膊、头部、胸前有明显伤痕，医护人员正在抢救，地上的面粉、血迹疑似被扫过，地上还有面汤，“女婿下跪认错，说‘妈，我对不起你，没把你女儿照顾好’。我问他为啥打我女儿，他不说话。”现场，李某春承认其打了吴某莉，被警方带走。
吴某莉的弟弟吴先生对记者称，案发时的一个情况，至今令他感到不解。他提到，平日里，面馆晚上10时左右就关门了，第二天店里也不做早餐，但事发当日凌晨，面馆厨房里的那锅面汤的温度近70摄氏度，姐姐被拖入锅中，李某春为何要这样做。
案发后，吴家人怀疑吴某莉曾多次遭受家暴。吴先生的妻子李女士称，她就家暴的情况问过李某春的家属，对方只是说“事情已经过去了，活着的人还要继续生活”。
