I find it rather ironic that BTC redistributes the wealth from the idle rich to the talented poor; even though BTC is anti-state and anti-communist, it's actually the working man's saviour, and it manages to achieve one of the goals of the communists (wealth redistribution) in a fast, effective, and fair way. 【大晚上的 为什么不让火龙果“睡觉”？】如果你乘坐飞机，飞过某地时发现地面上灯火通明，而这又不是住宅区，那不要惊慌，这并不是什么灵异现象，而很可能是火龙果种植园。一到夜晚，火龙果园就会上演“灯光秀”，这一奇特景象在网上曝光后，引来不少网友关注。问题来了，火龙果园为何要夜间开灯，难道它在夜晚不需要休息吗？
火龙果原产于地处赤道的中美洲沙漠地区，属于仙人掌科量天尺属植物，生性喜光喜热，是典型的长日照植物。
在自然环境下，其花芽分化主要受光照和温度的影响，最适生长温度为25—35℃，要求1天光照时数在12小时以上，如果光照时长不足，火龙果就可能会进入开花困难的“休眠”状态。在夜间为火龙果补充光照的行为，就是为了满足火龙果生长对光照的需求。
补光的原理说来也很简单，通过 LED 灯模拟日光，达到火龙果生长所需要的光照时长和强度，从而打破原有的光周期规律，提前让其开花或延长其花期，促使其全年开花结果。
尤其是在秋末冬初季节，借助人工补光技术可以有效促使花芽分化和诱导成花，显著提高火龙果的产量。
有研究者对此做了实验，结果发现，用白炽灯泡连续给火龙果补光4小时后，与在自然生长环境下，按照作物本身正常的生长周期和季节规律所产出的果实相比，补光火龙果的单果重和可溶性固形物含量均有所提高。
此外，补光处理还可以促进火龙果果实中的花青素的积累，有效提升果实的风味和营养价值。
尽管补光技术的应用让电费直线上升，极大增加了种植成本，但其带来的经济效益远超投入。在自然条件下，每年12月至次年4月，火龙果树难以开花结果，产量几乎为零。然而，通过补光技术，火龙果可以实现错峰上市，填补了市场空白，还能卖出更高的价格——大果的售价可以达到每公斤8元至10元。
近年来，火龙果价格已经被打下来，在超市货架上常以“10元5斤”甚至更低的价格示人，有的产地批发价低至1元/斤。
先前的火龙果大多依赖进口，在国内市场比较少见，物以稀为贵，自然价格也贵。
我国火龙果产业近十几年来发展迅猛，种植面积迅速扩大。中国火龙果种植面积在2012年仅3333.33公顷，近年则基本稳定在7万公顷以上。
2019年，我国火龙果产量达129.7万吨，成为世界第一大火龙果生产国。2023年，我国火龙果种植面积更是已突破百万亩，产量超过160万吨。
此外，火龙果自己也争气。首先，火龙果病虫相对较少，容易防治，产量高，结果快。通常第一年种植，第二年就能够直接开花结果，第三年就可以进入丰产期。相较于大多数果树动辄两三年的成长周期，它的产出效益实在是高。
而且，只要被“骗”得到位，它一年内能开花12—15次，从开花到果实成熟只需要30多天的时间。一年内，火龙果可以一茬一茬又一茬地连轴转，不是在结果的路上，就是正在结果。
