I read someone describing the difference between the tech in sci-fi and the magic in Fantasy in this way:
Tech doesn’t care what you think; but magic does.
This description has really stuck with me. What makes tech products truly shine is when it *appears to care about what the user thinks*. A tool stops being a tool and becomes MAGICAL when it can anticipate the user’s intent, and proactively help them to accomplish it.
I think this is also why #AI has captured so much of our imagination. What is essentially a bullshit generator has been able to create the *illusion of caring* about what the user thinks, and literally holds “conversations” in which it listens to what users have to say.
The saying clarifies what one has to do to make a tech product magical: it has to *care* about what the users think. It has to look and feel good, work well, be trustworthy, and anticipate their needs.
