This Monday , we continued our journey with Chapter 05, and we had an amazing session! We were fortunate to have nostr:npub1ytm3v8mkup6mnc9z2zjy0zz2czdsfd3kal7hcup6jgu5a5lm885qhup3z6 as our co-host and #Graysatoshi as the speaker for the day. Together, we explored exciting topics on The Cypherpunks and the Quest for Decentralized Currency.

1. What is Cypherpunks? – We delved into the Cypherpunks movement, understanding its role in the quest for privacy and decentralization.
2. Centralized vs. Decentralized Systems – A detailed comparison to grasp the true value of decentralization in today’s world.
3. A Brief History of Digital Currencies – We reviewed the evolution of digital currencies and how they paved the way for Bitcoin.

First, they shut down the Basic HTML site, forcing many of us to switch to clients such as Thunderbird. Now, they're using qr codes which are not only inaccessible to the blind but also to those who don't use smartphones! This is ridiculous! Yes, they do still have the option to click whether it's you trying to sign in or not (which still requires a smartphone and a carrier, which they claim to be concerned about), but how long before they remove that, too?

Meer Nederlanders willen Europees leger nu VS afhaakt, maar niet zelf vechten
De meeste Nederlanders geloven niet langer dat de Europese NAVO-landen kunnen rekenen op Amerikaanse militaire steun. Zij denken dat Europa op militair gebied op eigen benen zal moeten staan, waarbij de vorming van een Europees leger steeds meer steun krijgt.
Dat blijkt uit een representatief onderzoek van Ipsos I&O onder 1944 Nederlanders in opdracht van de NOS. Uit de enquête blijkt dat er onder Nederlanders weinig bereidheid is om zelf in dienst te gaan wanneer Nederland of een ander EU-land wordt aangevallen.
Het percentage mensen dat zich veel zorgen maakt over de oorlog in Oekraïne is deze maand op ongeveer hetzelfde niveau als in april 2022, vlak nadat de oorlog begon. Het is 10 procent hoger dan in december vorig jaar.
Zo veel zorgen maken Nederlanders zich over de oorlog in Oekraïne
Een deel van die zorgen kan mogelijk worden verklaard door recente uitspraken van de Amerikaanse president Trump over onderhandelingen met Rusland, zegt Dick Zandee. Hij is defensiedeskundige bij onderzoeksinstituut Clingendael. "Mensen hebben grote twijfels of de oorlog op een voor ons acceptabele manier wordt opgelost."
Eerder zei Trumps minister van Defensie Pete Hegseth al dat Oekraïne land zal moeten opgeven bij een vredesakkoord met Rusland en dat het NAVO-lidmaatschap er voor het land niet in zit. De VS wil dat Europese militairen gaan toezien op een eventuele vredesovereenkomst en niet de VS. "Dat roept de vraag op of we dat wel zonder de VS kunnen en je ziet de angst dat dat niet zo is", zegt Zandee.
Het onderzoek van Ipsos I&O laat zien dat slechts drie op de tien Nederlanders verwachten dat de VS Europese NAVO-partners zal blijven beschermen op het moment dat dat nodig is.
Europese samenwerking
Als mogelijk antwoord op de veranderde positie van de VS op het wereldtoneel, wil een toenemend deel van de Nederlanders graag dat er een Europees leger gevormd wordt. Was dit in december 42 procent, nu wil bijna de helft van de Nederlanders dat. Slechts 17 procent is tegen de vorming zo'n leger. In de huidige situatie heeft ieder land in de EU een eigen leger.
"Veel mensen vinden dat Europa voor zijn eigen verdediging moet zorgen", zegt Zandee. "Dat hoor je ook bij de Duitse verkiezingswinnaar Merz, die waarschijnlijk de volgende bondskanselier wordt, en andere Europese leiders."
Maar een Europees leger in de letterlijke zin van het woord is volgens hem geen realistisch scenario. "Dat is volstrekt onhaalbaar, je zit met verschillende talen, veiligheidsbelangen en regeringen. We moeten wel naar meer Europese samenwerking op defensiegebied."
Dat laatste gebeurt ook al succesvol, zegt Zandee. "Onze landmacht schaft bijvoorbeeld dezelfde tanks aan als de Duitsers."
Meevechten in Oekraïne
Een kwart van de Nederlanders vindt dat Nederland nu al zelf militairen naar Oekraïne moet sturen om dat land bij te staan. Dat is het hoogste percentage sinds Ipsos I&O begon met meten, kort na het begin van de oorlog. Het is bovendien meer dan een verdubbeling in de laatste twee maanden.
Zo veel respondenten willen dat de regering Nederlandse militairen naar Oekraïne stuurt
Slechts weinig mensen zijn bereid zelf in dienst te treden wanneer dat voor de eigen veiligheid nodig is: 18 procent is bereid en in staat het leger in te gaan als Nederland wordt aangevallen. Dat is wel meer dan wanneer een ander EU-land wordt aangevallen, dan kan en wil slechts 9 procent dat.
Zandee: "Je ziet vaak dat collectieve gevoelens met het eigenbelang botsen. Dienstbereidheid wordt door veel mensen ook wel als 'sneuvelbereidheid' gezien."
Ook willen Nederlanders liever niet dat naaste familie in dienst treedt bij een aanval op een EU-land. Daarentegen staat bijna de helft erachter als vrienden in dienst treden bij een aanval op Nederland, en ruim 40 procent bij een aanval op een ander EU-land.
