Taliban. The word is synonymous with religious fundamentalism — vividly clear since the militants swept back into Kabul in August 2021. Amid public executions and gender apartheid, there has been an intensifying war on free speech. Since the Taliban returned to power, media have been censored and radio stations in particular forced off the air. Yet, curiously, one foreign broadcaster endures: the BBC.
On 1 December 2022, the Taliban issued a decree closing down the two local stations run by the BBC’s rivals: Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. According to a Taliban spokesman, they were being silenced for their “non-compliance with journalistic principles and one-sided broadcasts”. Remarkably, though, the militants are happy to indulge their British counterpart, which broadcasts from Afghanistan in Dari and Pashto, while also hosting local variants of the BBC news website.
But while the Corporation clearly enjoys its unusual role, is editorial independence really maintained? For as UnHerd has discovered, BBC funds frequently end up Taliban coffers, channelled via organisations led by extremists at the very heart of government. More worrying still, these relationships seemingly shape the Corporations coverage in Afghanistan.
Perhaps it’s no coincidence that just two weeks before the Corporation’s rivals were banned, its South Asia bureau chief, Jacky Martens, met with Sirajuddin Haqqani: the Taliban’s deputy leader and Afghanistan’s interior minister. The notorious jihadi, proscribed on both sides of the Atlantic for terrorism, clearly enjoyed his encounter with Martens. According to a statement from Haqqani’s ministry, the BBC was “an important media outlet at the international level” and could rely on the Taliban’s “cooperation”. While others had been hostile when reporting the country’s “internal” issues, the BBC was “impartial”.

The launch of the British Muslim Network (BMN) this week — bringing together prominent individuals from the spheres of politics, media, business, entertainment, and sport — is the latest religious lobby group in town. But will it lead to healthier relations between Muslims and the state, or will it be yet another addition to Britain’s grievance-industrial complex?
The BMN is well-placed to impact policymaking, especially with successive governments — including the present Labour ministry — pursuing an approach of “non-engagement” with the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB). While social entrepreneur Akeela Ahmed, co-chair of BMN, has insisted that the new network seeks to “complement” organisations such as the MCB rather than replace them, an initiative that highlights the contributions of Britain’s socially and culturally diverse Muslim population would be a significant improvement.
However, there is much reason for pessimism, due to the groups and individuals involved in the BMN’s conception. This includes former Conservative Party co-chair Baroness Warsi, whose journey, from being egged by Islamists in Luton to standing accused of handing official Whitehall roles to those linked to Islamist groups, has constituted a fascinating case study of identitarian self-preservation in modern Britain. In the build-up to this week’s launch, Warsi justified the creation of the fresh lobby group on the grounds that “for too long British Muslims have been made to feel their voices do not matter”. Indeed, this was the prevailing theme in her recent book Muslims Don’t Matter, which argued that Islamophobia is Britain’s primary bigotry blind spot.

Kinder und Jugendliche da zu begleiten und aufzufangen ist viel wichter als alles abzusperren und dadurch die Neugier anzustacheln.

I thought I was pretty clear, the more the government owns, the less we own. And since it’s a finite resource, whoever owns the most, controls the market price.
Want to lower it for a bit, flood the market. Wanna raise it for a bit, hodl.
This all seems pretty basic which is what perplexes me. Either people have completely overlooked a serious loophole, or I have it all wrong. Which I would be happy with as well. And if I am wrong, point me back to the path because I am obviously lost. 😝
