Februar ist Black History Month!
Wir wollen diesen Anlass nutzen, um euch Olaudah Equiano vorzustellen. Nachdem Equiano selbst versklavt wurde, war er ein bedeutender Kämpfer für das Verbot des Sklavenhandels. Vor allem seine 1789 veröffentlichte Autobiographie war sehr einflussreich und erlangte seiner Zeit großes Aufsehen. Heute dürfte der Name Equiano auch einigen bekannt vorkommen – aber nicht nur in Zusammenhang mit dem Abolitionisten, sondern auch wegen des nach ihm benannten Tiefseekabels “Equiano”, das Google von Westeuropa nach Südafrika legt. In Anbetracht dessen, dass damit ein weiterer Teil digitaler Infrastrukturen in die Hände eines privaten Unternehmens des Globalen Nordens geht und sich dadurch globale koloniale Machtverhältnisse fortschreiben, ist diese Aneignung seines Namens jedoch ziemlich dreist.
