Part X of my series "Hey, remember the #metaverse?"
Perhaps against all reason, I'm somewhat bullish on #Decentraland ... I think if any Metaverse is going to work, it's going to be the one that (a) still appears to have a robust community of developers behind it and (b) is built on blockchain technology.
Despite that, this essay attempts to write an "autopsy" for Decentraland, and much like the myriad Bitcoin "autopsies" of yesteryear I feel this is a bit premature. What I see here is the general confusion as to what the Metaverse "even is" and who it is for. Many of the points raised here are about issues with "Decentraland as a product," rather than "Decentraland as an open-world Metaverse."
This is an important distinction; Disneyland is a "product". Rome is a "place." If you can't find the bathrooms easily or complain that the candy store is too close to the Matterhorn, you have a problem with the *product* of the Disneyland experience. In contrast, you don't go to Rome and say "gee why isn't there a Cheesecake Factory and Coldstone within walking distance of my hotel??"
In the essay Yadlos cites approvingly Facebook's early attempts at user engagement, and the importance of creating a "curated" experience for users. But that's Disneyland, not Rome. Her strongest criticisms land when she discusses the attempts by Decentraland (I guess meaning the DAO or foundation?) to engage exclusively with big fashion brands for things like Metaverse Fashion Week... But that was at "peak Metaverse hype" in ~2022 or so. That problem has effectively taken care of itself, as corporations abandoned "the Metaverse" as soon as AI became a thing in 2023.
So yeah... call me crazy, but I think there's potential with this. There's only one way to go, and that's up.... Either that or "kick it" leg-less in Meta Horizon Worlds...
